Chester Co. man killed in crash went down embankment in Lancaster County
A Chester County man has died in a single vehicle crash in Lancaster County, officials said.
The wreck happened around 7:30 a.m. on S.C. 9 near Grace Avenue, according to officials.
David Wayne Roberts, 63, of Great Falls, died at the scene, said Karla Knight Deese, Lancaster County Coroner.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Roberts, the driver of a 2003 Chevrolet SUV, was killed, said Lance Cpl. Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol. Roberts was alone in the vehicle.
The SUV was heading west on S.C. 9 when it went off the right side of the road and hit a guardrail, Miller said. The SUV then crossed the highway and went off the left side of the road, down an embankment, then hit a tree, Miller said.
Roberts was not wearing a seat belt and had to extricated from the SUV, Miller said.
The busy road is also known as Chester Highway. Troopers, fire departments, and other South Carolina emergency officials were on the scene for several hours. The incident site is between Lancaster and the Catawba River.
