Need eggs? A store with 2 York County, 1 Gaston County locations has them for $2.99
A local store was selling cheap eggs by the dozens, and people flocked to the store to lay hands on the breakfast commodity.
It was 28 degrees in Fort Mill on Tuesday morning when an early bird stopped by Saltwater Markets at 6:45 a.m.
They were looking for the eggs, just like the nearly four dozen other customers who came to the store before 10 a.m. Across the county, nearly 70 people stopped by the Saltwater Markets location in Clover.
Saltwater Markets posted on its Facebook page earlier this week that they’ve “gotta get a ton of eggs” and would sell them below cost on Tuesday, at $2.99 a dozen. The store brought in 150 dozen eggs at each of its stores.
The sale will continue Wednesday.
“I posted it yesterday and the community took it and ran with it,” said Jackson Carter.
But he made one point clear. You must by something else at the store to get the lower price for eggs.
The price of eggs recently skyrocketed. Area retailers are selling them now for $5 or more a dozen.
“Due to extremely high demand we’ll need to do first come, first served, but believe us when we tell you we’ve got lots of eggs coming, and can get plenty more if needed,” the Facebook post read.
The post registered with many.
In less than six hours it generated more than 100 comments and almost 300 shares. Many posted thanks to the company, or that they would be at one of the stores on Tuesday.
Carter said the store wanted to “give back” to the community. Plus, it’s needed for many things, he said.
“You feed your kids eggs in the morning for breakfast, you use it in dishes, you use it to bake,” Carter said. “We want to keep things affordable for everybody to be able to eat.”
Carter said the store brings in eggs from local suppliers in the Carolinas.
“We buy as much as we possibly can from each farmer,” he said. “And then once they run out of eggs, we’ve got to buy them from somebody else.”
Saltwater has stores at 887 Gold Hill Road in Fort Mill, 713 Bethel St. in Clover and 3414 S. New Hope Road in Gastonia, North Carolina.
