The return of the McDonald’s Snack Wrap has me nostalgic about those golden arches
The declaration sent shockwaves through the fast food world.
On Thursday, Dec. 5, McDonald’s USA president Joe Erlinger announced the return of one of the restaurant’s most-coveted menu items: the Snack Wrap.
Erlinger, who made the announcement on Good Morning America, said the Snack Wrap would be back in 2025, but did not give a specific date.
“It has a cult following. I get so many emails into my inbox about this product,” he said.
I think it’s pretty safe to say social media’s reaction was overwhelmingly positive.
What is a Snack Wrap?
If you’re not familiar, a Snack Wrap is basically a crispy chicken tender with lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese and ranch sauce wrapped in a tortilla.
The Snack Wrap is part of a long list of McDonald’s discontinued menu items, which includes some of my personal favorites like the Cheesy Bacon Fries and Wild Berry Smoothie.
Other fast food chains have tried to mimic the Snack Wrap, with the Wendy’s Grilled Chicken Ranch Wrap, Burger King’s Royal Crispy Wrap and KFC’s Orginal Twister Wrap – but all have fallen short.
Why is the Snack Wrap a big deal?
Fast food restaurants get a lot of traffic. It’s in the name — they’re quick and convenient.
If there’s a Taco Bell or Arby’s on your way home for school or work, you’re likely to visit those places more.
But there are certain items that turn those restaurants from a stop along your commute to a destination for the ultimate comfort food.
Take chicken sandwiches, for example. If you live near a Wendy’s, you might settle for a Classic Chicken Sandwich. But if you want the pinnacle of fried poultry, you’d probably drive out of the way to the nearest Chick-fil-A.
That’s what Snack Wraps do for McDonald’s.
Biting into a freshly-prepared Snack Wrap, pairing it with the best french fries fast food has to offer and washing it down with a Sprite with as much carbonation as 10 liters of soda can make a 15-20 minute drive (and the often unbearable Charlotte traffic) worth it.
What the Snack Wrap means to me
The Snack Wrap, released in 2006, was discontinued in the United States in 2016, Forbes reported. (The beloved wrap can still be found internationally.)
Although I did love them, I only ate them a handful of times. But its return does evoke feelings of nostalgia.
Long gone are the days pleading to my parents to get McDonald’s, only to be met with my least favorite rhetorical question: “You have McDonald’s money?”
And that exhilarating feeling of seeing one of my parents walk in the door after getting home from work with a brown bag with those signature golden arches on each side.
I’ll always cherish those high school memories, watching my buddies rip the top bun off a McDouble, putting a McChicken on it and replacing the bun to make a sandwich whose name we can’t print.
Or in college, challenging my friends to see who could finish a week’s worth of calories in one sitting by eating the Mickey D’s Dinner Box — two Big Macs, two cheeseburgers, 20 McNuggets and four small fries.
The reemergence of the Snack Wrap — whenever it happens next year — is sure to draw big crowds and long lines at McDonald’s locations across the country.
Fast food lovers like me will spend more “McDonald’s money” than ever.
