As America250 celebrations continue to inspire everything from limited-edition foods to patriotic merchandise, Tennessee-based Peg Leg Porker Spirits is taking a more traditional approach. The brand recently unveiled Spirit of America, a limited-edition Bottled-in-Bond Tennessee Straight Bourbon created to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary.

The release is part of the company's broader "Raise a Glass to 250" campaign and arrives as consumers look for new ways to celebrate the historic milestone at backyard barbecues, holiday gatherings, and summer get-togethers. But unlike some anniversary-themed products that lean heavily on packaging and nostalgia, Spirit of America also brings a whiskey designation that carries real significance among bourbon enthusiasts.

Why the Bottled-in-Bond Designation Matters

While many casual whiskey drinkers have seen the words "Bottled-in-Bond" on a label, fewer understand what the designation actually means.

The Bottled-in-Bond Act was passed by Congress in 1897 as one of the earliest consumer protection laws in the United States. At the time, whiskey quality varied dramatically, and some producers were known to blend spirits with additives or dilute bottles to stretch profits. The law established strict standards that bourbon producers had to meet in order to use the designation.

To qualify as Bottled-in-Bond, a whiskey must be produced by a single distiller during a single distilling season, aged for at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse, and bottled at exactly 100 proof.

More than a century later, the designation remains a respected marker of quality and consistency within the bourbon industry.

A Bourbon Inspired by Barbecue Traditions

Spirit of America (1:00)

Spirit of America isn't just another Bottled-in-Bond bourbon. The release also incorporates the signature approach that has helped Peg Leg Porker carve out a niche among whiskey and barbecue fans alike.

The Tennessee Straight Bourbon is filtered through hickory charcoal, a process the company says helps create a subtle smoky character inspired by traditional barbecue flavors. It's a fitting connection for a brand founded by award-winning pitmaster Carey Bringle, whose Peg Leg Porker barbecue restaurant has become a Nashville institution.

According to the company, the bourbon was created to celebrate American craftsmanship, resilience, and community while honoring the traditions that have shaped both Tennessee whiskey and American barbecue culture.

More Than a Commemorative Bottle

Spirit of America also supports a larger cause beyond the anniversary celebration itself.

Peg Leg Porker says a portion of proceeds from the release will benefit Hearty Hog's Veteran BBQ Camp, a Tennessee nonprofit that helps military veterans develop barbecue skills while building community and career opportunities.

The bourbon has a suggested retail price of $79.99 and is available in select markets and through participating retailers in states where shipping is permitted.

With America250 celebrations expected to continue through next year, consumers will likely see no shortage of commemorative products. But by combining a historic whiskey designation, Tennessee barbecue traditions, and a charitable component, Peg Leg Porker's Spirit of America aims to offer something more meaningful than a patriotic label alone.
