Four arrested in second I-77 chase involving stolen car in 6 days from Charlotte into SC
Four people were arrested Tuesday after a police chase from Charlotte into Rock Hill before the pursued stolen car crashed near Fort Mill, officials said.
The chase was the second from North Carolina into South Carolina in less than a week involving a stolen car that reached speeds of 100 mph. This car, a 2021 Nissan Versa, had been reported stolen in nearby Union County, N.C.
No one was hurt in Tuesday’s pursuit before the vehicle wrecked on the Interstate 77 Exit 85 ramp at S.C. 160, according to York County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Trent Faris and an incident report. Speeds during the pursuit in the afternoon before 4 p.m. reached 100 MPH, Faris said.
York County sheriff’s deputies arrested two people at the crash site. Two others fled on foot after the wreck and were caught across SC. 160 near a hotel in the Kingsley business park, the report stated. Three of the people in the car were adults from Charlotte.
In custody now on charges of conspiracy and possession of a stolen car are Richard Eugene Petty, 19; McKinley Hayes Hunt, 19; and Jabriel Halin Blakeney, 19, according to the incident report and jail records.
Petty, the alleged driver, also faces charges of reckless driving, failure to stop for a blue light and failure to stop for a school bus, the incident report and jail records show.
The other person was a male 17-year-old who was charged as a juvenile with possession of a stolen car and conspiracy, the incident report showed.
Chase ends
The pursuit went south on I-77 to Exit 75 near Rock Hill, where the car kept going on Porter Road and surrounding streets, the incident report stated. The car then returned northbound on I-77 before the pursuit ended.
Fort Mill Police Department and Rock Hill Police Department officers assisted.
York County deputies said in the incident report Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers tried to stop the car in North Carolina before it entered South Carolina.
CMPD has not released information about why police wanted to stop the car. Efforts to reach CMPD about the incident were unsuccessful.
On Dec. 14 in an unrelated chase, York County deputies charged two juveniles after a chase from South Carolina into North Carolina and back to Rock Hill that reached speeds over 100 miles per hour and involved a vehicle reported stolen.
