Jack Logan stands with a message to the community: Put down the guns.

And he wants to see the killer of a 17-year-old girl who died in York last month brought to justice.

“Someone come forward and help this York Police Department,” Logan said Wednesday as he stood in front of the police station, “so this mother, and she has a young child, so that when he grows up, will be at ease, knowing her killer is off the streets.”

E’monnie Dixon, a student at Rock Hill High School and the mother of an infant, was shot and killed the morning of April 3 in York. She was shot in the back in what police described as a random shooting that broke out during a gathering of people on Hickory Lane.

Logan, a Greenville native who drove to York this week to talk about the case, founded his group, Put Down The Guns Now Young People, after losing a loved one to gun violence. He promotes gun safety, especially among young people.

Lt. Rich Caddell said York police have interviewed more than 50 people in the case. He said they have also involved ballistic experts and crime scene reconstruction experts from the State Law Enforcement Division.

“It’s a tough case,” Caddell said Wednesday.

He said the investigation is active, but police are not ready to make an arrest.

Logan said many times, in cases like this one, suspects go unidentified, investigations are delayed due to the lack of evidence and justice is incomplete.

“The public needs to step forward,” Logan said.

“The young people that were at that party, anyone else who had been in conversation with that person, those people who were in the car with that person, need to tell the police who took the life,” he said. “Because if this person shot out of the car once, they’ll do it again.”

Logan, who said he has not been in touch with Dixon’s family, travels across the nation in response to acts of gun violence, but he said he would rather prevent them.

Put Down the Guns Now Young People holds educational sessions where young people can learn about the dangers of guns through skits and are taught how to safely handle fake weapons.

Logan also hands out gun locks to prevent a gun from firing.
