‘Another big win for South Carolina’: This Rock Hill company will add 700 new jobs.
Ross Stores plans to add 700 new jobs in York County.
The South Carolina Department of Commerce announced on Tuesday that Ross will invest $68 million over the next five years in its distribution and warehousing operations in York County.
The expansion represents a $68 million investment.
“Today’s announcement is another big win for South Carolina,” state Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt said in a release Tuesday. “Ross Stores, Inc.’s decision to further invest in our state shows how critical good transportation infrastructure is in attracting investments that create jobs. Congratulations to Ross and York County on this exciting news.”
Ross has a considerable presence already in both the Fort Mill and Rock Hill areas. The coming investment will take place in Rock Hill.
“Ross Stores, Inc. brought significant investment and jobs to Rock Hill when they located here in 2013, and I’m thrilled to know our community has served them well,” said Mayor John Gettys. “We look forward to working with them on expansion efforts and bringing more jobs and opportunity to the people of Rock Hill.”
Ross is an off-price apparel and home fashion company. Founded in 1982, the company has more than 1,800 retail locations.
“York County and the state of South Carolina have been a good place to do business for Ross for many years,” Ross senior vice president Eric Johnson said in the release. “We look forward to expanding and improving our distribution and packaging capabilities as we increase our presence in York County.”
In the release, York County Council Chairman Michael Johnson said he’s hopeful for continued success with the significant expansion.
“York County is proud to see our existing industries grow and thrive,” Johnson said. “The jobs and investment this announcement bring to York County are good for both our community and our state.”

In 2002, York County and Ross Stores agreed to a fee-in-lieu agreement that set a fee rather than taxes for the company to do business here. A similar agreement came in 2013. Since 2002, the company invested about $450 million in York County.
As of February, Ross employs about 2,500 people in York County.
In December 2019, York County Council agreed to a 10-year extension of the 2002 tax agreement. The latest expansion meets criteria for a new fee-in-lieu deal. Ross properties in the deal include three Rock Hill sites on Galleria Boulevard and East Springdale Road, and five Fort Mill locations on Retail Drive, Central Carolinas Parkway and Wilson Business Highway.
