Up next in Rock Hill? How about a new place to throw axes, near Winthrop.

Folks looking to unwind from a long day by chucking sharpened metal and wood implements at a wall, may soon have that chance.

MHAK Holdings wants to lease space in a Rock Hill industrial building to create an axe throwing venue. The application is for Craft Axe Throwing, which has sites in Columbia, Greenville, Spartanburg, Lexington and four states outside South Carolina.

The 274 Columbia Avenue site is near Winthrop and Dist. 3 Stadium in a revitalized area of downtown. It’s not far from new hotel, restaurant, brewery and business sites, along with the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center. The address is a former small engine repair business.

In 2017 the city zoning board of appeals made an exception to allow a craft brewery use in half of the building, for Slow Play Brewing. The axe throwing site would take another exception. The appeals board meets May 18 to decide.

The plan is for a venue similar to a bowling alley, with throwing lanes people or groups can rent to throw axes at wooden targets. It would have a bar where customers can buy beer and wine. The application shows eight lanes, the bar and a photo booth.

The new business isn’t a done deal. The city planning staff write-up ahead of next week’s meeting notes existing parking issues which could worsen given the brewery and axe throwing site likely would bring customers at the same times.
