Concord airport adds 3 new flights to popular destinations in the East Coast, Midwest

Concord-Padgett Regional Airport is getting three new nonstop routes for passengers seeking flights to the New York; Washington, D.C.; and Detroit metro areas, officials announced Tuesday.

Avelo Airlines will begin the twice-weekly flights in May and June. The additions will kick off May 22 with service from the Charlotte region to Long Island, New York via MacArthur Airport on Thursdays and Sundays.

Flights to the Washington, D.C. area through Dulles International Airport in Virginia begins May 23, followed by routes to Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus, Michigan on June 13. The service for the two cities will be available on Mondays and Fridays.

The announcements come after the airline opened its newest base of operations at the airport on Thursday, with plans to add 50 new jobs. Avelo announced plans to have two Boeing 737 aircraft in Concord. Since starting service in May 2024, Avelo has flown more than 65,000 customers on more than 550 flights from the airport in the Charlotte region.

With the upcoming flights, Concord now has 11 destinations for passengers. The other eight destinations include: Albany, New York; Boston/Manchester, New Hampshire; Daytona Beach, Florida; Hartford, Connecticut; Lakeland/ Orlando, Florida; Nashville, Tennessee; New Haven, Connecticut; and Rochester, New York.

Avelo cut Wilmington, Delaware from its Concord schedule due to low ticket sales, The Charlotte Observer previously reported. A route to Bradley International Airport in Connecticut is also ending on March 30 because of consolidation plans.

Avelo in Concord

Houston-based Avelo became the third airline at Concord’s airport in May 2024, following an announcement last year. The first flight went to New Haven, Connecticut.

Trevor Yealy, head of commercial development for Avelo, said at the time that the company wanted to take advantage of an opportunity to serve the Concord and Charlotte region. The airport and its parking is also convenient for customers, he added.

“Easy in, easy out,” he said. “The parking lot is only a stone’s throw from the terminal, which is really nice.”

About Concord Regional Airport

Concord-Padgett Airport is owned by the city and opened in 1994. It was renamed in honor of former mayor Scott Padgett in 2018.

The one-runway airport also provides service to Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines.

NASCAR race teams use the airport often because of its proximity to Charlotte Motor Speedway. It’s also an alternative to nearby Charlotte Douglas International Airport, one of the world’s busiest airports and a major hub for American Airlines.
