7 new coronavirus cases reported in York County as total tops 130, SC officials say
Seven new cases of coronavirus were reported in York County, South Carolina health officials announced Sunday. Lancaster County added three reported cases and Chester County added one case.
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 113 new cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, across the state, for a total of 3,319 positive tests in all 46 counties since the pandemic started.
DHEC also announced Sunday that two more people in the state died after contracting the virus. In all, there have been 82 coronavirus-related deaths in South Carolina, three of whom were York County residents.
The two who died most recently were residents of Charleston and Greenville counties, according to DHEC.
Since the pandemic started, there have been 134 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in York County, according to DHEC. Lancaster County has had 65 reported cases and Chester County has had 19 cases.
Officials with the S.C. Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services confirmed Sunday that a Lancaster County employee has tested positive for the virus and is isolated at home. The positive test for an employee of a law enforcement agency is the fifth such case in York and Lancaster counties, officials said.
York County Emergency Management Director Chuck Haynes urged the public to continue to follow the stay-at-home rules whenever possible and continue to practice social distancing and hygiene when work or other requirements force people to leave home.
As of Sunday, more than 31,000 coronavirus tests have been completed by DHEC’s public lab and private labs in the state, so roughly 11% of tests have come back positive, according to the department.
Based on new estimates, DHEC calculated that there are up to 823 unidentified cases in York County. The department estimated Lancaster County has as many as 399 unidentified cases and Chester County has up to 117 unidentified cases.
According to its website, DHEC calculates estimated cases based on evidence that for every known case, there could be up to nine unidentified people with the virus.
