Lancaster and Chester counties each report one new coronavirus case; York County adds 2
Two new cases of coronavirus were reported in York County, South Carolina health officials announced Monday. Lancaster and Chester counties each added one case.
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 127 new cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, across the state, for a total of 3,439 positive tests in all 46 counties since the pandemic started.
DHEC also announced Monday that five more people in the state died after contracting the virus. In all, there have been 87 coronavirus-related deaths in South Carolina, three of whom were York County residents.
The five who died most recently were residents of Aiken, Beaufort, Greenville and Kershaw counties, according to DHEC.
Since the pandemic started, there have been 136 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in York County, according to DHEC. Lancaster County has had 66 reported cases and Chester County has had 20 cases.
Chester County Supervisor Shane Stuart said even though cases continue to rise, some of the people who had confirmed cases of the virus early in March have recovered.
“The recoveries are a positive for the community as the pandemic continues,” Stuart said.
As of Monday, more than 32,000 coronavirus tests have been completed by DHEC’s public lab and private labs in the state, so roughly 10% of tests have come back positive, according to the department.
Based on new projections, DHEC calculated that there are up to 835 unidentified cases in York County. The department estimated Lancaster County has as many as 405 unidentified cases and Chester County has up to 123 unidentified cases.
According to its website, DHEC calculates estimated cases based on evidence that for every known case, there could be up to nine unidentified people with the virus.
