York County region coronavirus cases continue to rise as SC total passes 4,000
York County’s total of confirmed coronavirus cases went up by two to 151 Friday, health officials reported.
Statewide cases have risen to 4,086, reports the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Lancaster County added two cases and now has 73, reports DHEC. Chester County logged one new case and has 23.
Seven more people have died, bringing the total to 116 in South Carolina, reports DHEC. In total, three people from York County and two from Lancaster County have died. As of Friday, DHEC had not reported any deaths in Chester County.
Seven deaths were reported Friday. Three were older people with underlying health ailments from Florence, Richland and Lexington counties. Three were older people from Berkeley, Lee and Horry counties who had no reported underlying health problems, according to DHEC. One middle-aged person from Sumter County with no reported health ailments also died.
As of Friday, DHEC estimated that 67% of people in South Carolina who had COVID-19 have recovered.
Chester County Supervisor Shane Stuart cautioned the public to not let down their guard as the pandemic continues. People need to continue social distancing and stay at home unless they have to be out for work or other special circumstances allowed under state guidelines for the state of emergency.
Mid-April was believed early in March to be the expected high-point for state cases, but case numbers continue to increase, Stuart said.
Stuart said state health officials have told top managers in S.C. counties the end of April is projected to now be the peak for cases.
“We had another case confirmed Friday in Chester County, sadly,” Stuart said.
The best way for the public to help neighbors and their own families to stay safe is to stay home, Stuart said.
“Sadly some of our citizens are not following the ‘Home or Work’ order that is in place,” Stuart said. “As a result, the projected peak date has been pushed back. The sooner our citizens help us with that order, the quicker we can get through this event.”
