5 more in York County positive for coronavirus and one in Lancaster County, DHEC says

Five more cases of coronavirus have been reported in York County, and one more case in Lancaster County, South Carolina health officials announced Monday.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 142 new cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, across the state, for a total of 5,613 positive tests in all 46 counties.

Now, there have been 186 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in York County since the pandemic started, according to DHEC. Lancaster County has had 88 cases and Chester County, which did not report any new cases Monday, has had 27 cases, according to DHEC.

In addition to the new cases, the department announced that three other individuals have died in Clarendon, Florence and Greenville counties. All of the recent deaths involved elderly individuals, according to DHEC.

Based on DHEC’s count, there have been 177 coronavirus-related deaths in South Carolina. Three residents in York County and three residents in Lancaster County have died after contracting the virus.

In the city of York, with a population of about 10,000 people, the coronavirus continues to affect small businesses and workers, said Mayor Michael Fuesser.

“The downtown area here in York has really been devastated by this, and we all hope that we can get back to where we were two or three months ago before this happened,” Fuesser said. “People are chomping at the bit to get back open.”

City officials continue to share stimulus and other economic information with businesses, employers, and workers, Fuesser said.

Yet, Fuesser said people understand the reality that staying at home is a health benefit for all people.

“In York, people really are staying home for the most part,” Fuesser said.

More than 52,000 coronavirus tests had been completed by DHEC’s public lab and private labs in the state as of Monday, and roughly 11% of tests have come back positive, according to the department.

New projections released Monday by DHEC show that there is a good number of cases unreported in the area. The department calculated that there are up to 1,143 unidentified cases in York County. DHEC estimated Lancaster County has as many as 541 unidentified cases, and Chester County has up to 166 unidentified cases.

According to its website, DHEC calculates the projected cases based on evidence that for every known case, there could be up to nine unidentified people with the virus.
