Pedestrian killed in York County highway truck collision identified as Rock Hill man
A person walking outside Rock Hill was killed late Friday after being hit by a truck, officials said.
Michael Watkins, 53, of Rock Hill, died in the collision, said Sabrina Gast, York County Coroner.
The incident happened before 7 p.m. on Lesslie Highway near Drakeford Lane, said Gast and Trooper Brandon Bolt of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The location is near the Lesslie Volunteer Fire Department about two miles south of the Rock Hill city limits.
Watkins was walking in the road when struck by a 1998 Ford pickup truck, Bolt said. Watkins died at the scene, police and coroner officials said.
The driver of the truck was not injured, Bolt said.
No charges have been filed, troopers said. The crash remains under investigation.
The highway fatality is the 49th in York County in 2019, according to the S.C. Department of Public Safety. Eight people have died in Chester County wrecks, and 16 in Lancaster County in 2019 crashes, officials said.
The fatality is 939th in South Carolina in 2019, public safety officials said.
