1 killed, 2 hurt including child age 4, in York crash on New Year’s Eve, troopers say
One person was killed and two were injured in a head-on crash in York County on New Year’s Eve, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
One of the people hurt in the wreck was a 4-year-old child, said Master Trooper Gary Miller.
The collision happened around 7 p.m. Tuesday on S.C. 5 about six miles south of Rock Hill, Miller said. The crash involved a Kia sedan and a box truck, Miller said.
The sedan was heading south on the highway near the Catawba River and the Lancaster County line when it went left of center and hit the truck head-on, Miller said in a statement released by the highway patrol.
The driver of the Kia was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, Miller said. The driver has not yet been identified by the York County Coroner.
The child was a passenger in the Kia, Miller said. The child was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte as a precautionary measure, Miller said.
The child was restrained in a car seat in the back of the Kia at the time of the crash, Miller said.
The driver of the box truck, a 39-year-old man from Lancaster, was injured, troopers said. His condition has not been released.
The crash remains under investigation, troopers said.
The fatality was the 49th on York County roads in 2019, according to the S.C. Department of Public Safety. Statewide, at least 979 people died in crashes in 2019, public safety statistics show.
