Rock Hill volunteer gave 40 years to Piedmont Medical Center, residents mark wins
Each month, The Herald shares accomplishments from the York County region. Here are the highlights:
Hospital volunteer ‘retires’ after 40 years
For 40 years, Judy Fewell of Rock Hill greeted visitors at Piedmont Medical Center’s gift shop.
Fewell, 79, recently had to stop volunteering for health reasons. A Winthrop University alumna and former teacher, Fewell for decades volunteered in Piedmont’s gift shop two days a week. She also helped with decorating, painting and other projects around the hospital.
“I wanted to be able to use my brain and keep myself alert,” she said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I met some wonderfully nice people and made some very good friends.”
Fewell said she helped with Piedmont’s Lights for Love scholarship fundraiser for future nurses and assisted when Piedmont provided medical alert necklaces in house.
After logging thousands of hours in the gift shop, Fewell’s last day as a Piedmont volunteer was Dec. 27, 2019.
“Volunteering is good for the soul, good for life,” she said. “It makes you a lot happier when you can help someone.”
