1 dead, 1 hurt after tractor, SUV collide in Lancaster County, troopers say

One person was killed and another injured late Thursday in Lancaster County after a collision between a tractor and an SUV, troopers said.

The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. on Pleasant Plain Road near Kershaw, said Master Trooper David Jones of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Lancaster County Coroner Karla Knight-Deese identified the person who died as Don Rutledge, 71, of Kershaw.

Both vehicles were headed north on the highway when they collided, Jones said. The driver of the tractor was ejected and later died at Medical University of South Carolina-Lancaster hospital, Jones said.

The driver of the SUV was hurt and taken to the same Lancaster hospital, Jones said. The extent of that driver’s injuries have not been released.

The wreck remains under investigation by the highway patrol and the Lancaster County Coroner’s office.
