1 dead in Lancaster County crash between truck and car near school, officials say
One person was killed Thursday in a crash in Lancaster County between a tractor-trailer and a car, officials said.
The crash happened around 2:20 p.m. on S.C. 522 north of S.C. 9 near Buford Circle, officials said. The site is near the entrance to Buford Middle School, officials said.
The driver of a 2001 Chevy Malibu was heading south on S.C. 522 when the car went off the right side of the road, said highway patrol Master Trooper Gary Miller. The car then went left of the center line and struck the truck that was heading north, Miller said.
The driver of the Malibu died, Miller said. The driver has not been identified.
The truck driver was not injured, Miller said.
Lancaster County School District officials said they do not believe the wreck involved any students or staff, said Bryan Vaughn, director of safety and transportation for the district.
The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Department of Public Safety and the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office, officials said.
S.C. 522 is called Rocky River Road in that area. Buford High School and Buford Elementary School are also in the vicinity of the wreck.
Lancaster County Emergency Management, county fire fighters, and S.C. Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
