Sheriff still looking for Rock Hill suspect in fatal shooting of Charlotte man

A Charlotte man was fatally shot Monday outside Rock Hill and the suspect remains uncaught, officials said.

Tony J. Stephens, 34, was found dead near the intersection of Hall Spencer Road and Quaint Lane, said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast. Stephens is from Charlotte.

York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson said deputies have an arrest warrant charging Corey Jermaine Troupe, 49, with murder. Troupe has not been located, Tolson said.

Details about the killing have not been released. Stephens’ body was found near some junked cars, said Trent Faris spokesman for the sheriff’s office. The location is southeast of Rock Hill near the Lesslie and Catawba communities, between U.S. 21 and S.C. 901.

The call for emergency crews to respond went out before 5 p.m. Monday, emergency officials said.

The area around the intersection was blocked off by police for several hours as investigators, EMS and other emergency crews investigated the scene.

More than 20 sheriff’s office deputies responded, including forensic units and other officers.
