1 dead, 1 injured in head-on York County crash between York and Rock Hill

A driver was killed and a passenger was injured in a head-on crash Saturday in York County that left a main road between Rock Hill and York closed for hours, officials said.

The driver was identified as 41-year-old Julius T. Hiland III, according to York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.

The collision happened around 7:10 a.m. on S.C. 5 west of the Moss Justice Center, said Master Trooper David Jones of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The vehicle driven by Hiland collided head-on with a truck, Jones said.

Hiland died at the scene, according to Gast and Jones.

A passenger in Hiland’s vehicle was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, Jones said. That person’s identity and condition were unavailable Sunday.

The driver of the truck was not injured, Jones said.

The stretch of S.C. 5 between Osteen Road and Park Place near the crash site was blocked for hours as the crash was investigated by the highway patrol and coroner’s office, the York County Sheriff’s Office said. The road re-opened later Saturday.

The sheriff’s office issued a public safety alert about the fatality and road closure through Facebook and Twitter social media.

The fatality is the 38th on York County highways in 2021, according to the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
