Three people killed in head-on crash between trucks on SC road are identified by coroner

Three people were killed Friday night when two pickup trucks were involved in a head-on crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened at about 10:25 p.m. in Lancaster County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.

A 2023 Toyota pickup was driving south on North Rocky River Road, where it collided with a 2004 Chevrolet pickup that was heading north on the same road, according to Bolt. That’s not far from the state line separating South Carolina and North Carolina.

Both pickup drivers and a passenger in the Toyota died, Bolt said.

The Chevy driver was 25-year-old Lancaster resident Caleb Eubanks, while Kershaw residents David Helms, 72, and Angela Helms, 66, were the people in the Toyota, Lancaster County Coroner Karla Deese said. All three victims died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if any of the people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the Chevy and Toyota to collide was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.

Through Dec. 8, at least 905 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 19 people have died in Lancaster County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
