Which Rock Hill region marching bands can win a state title? The shows start soon
Feverish in support of their marching bands, it’s time for high schools across the Rock Hill region to find out if they’ll add to their historic haul of state championships.
Most fall team sports are getting ready to start their playoffs, but it’s already state title season for high school marching bands across South Carolina. Three straight weekends of championship competition start Saturday, Oct. 18, with two of the Rock Hill region’s most decorated programs taking the field.
Catawba Ridge and York Comprehensive high schools will march Saturday afternoon at Blythewood High School, just north of Columbia, in the state 4A competition. York is a five-time state marching band champion, whose last title in 2003 completed a run of four straight wins.
Defending 4A champ Catawba Ridge owns three state titles in just five seasons marching.
Those records put York in the top 8% and Catawba Ridge in the top 13% of all South Carolina public high schools on the list of all-time state championships.
All six state size classifications use the same format to determine state champions. Bands perform in a preliminary round, followed by awards. The top 12 bands from that preliminary round advance to the finals. Awards following the finals shows crown the state champion.
There are 20 bands marching in the 4A preliminary round Saturday, Oct. 18. Preliminary round awards that set the finals schedule begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by finals performances starting at 6:30 p.m. Finals awards will be handed out beginning at 10:20 p.m.
Those same times will be used for state championship events in other classifications, too.
At separate locations, the state will also host the 2A and Traditional High-Step competitions on Saturday. There aren’t any Rock Hill region bands scheduled to march in those events.
The rest of the Rock Hill region will get an opportunity on Saturday to tune up before their own state competitions. Rock Hill District Three Stadium hosts the Olde English Festival of Bands featuring Andrew Jackson, Lewisville, Lancaster, South Pointe, Nation Ford, Indian Land and Northwestern high schools.
Fort Mill, Nation Ford rivalry highlights band events
The biggest day for area marching bands at state events comes on Oct. 25, and the biggest competition on that date is the state 5A competition.
Fort Mill, Nation Ford, Indian Land, Northwestern and Rock Hill will combine to make up nearly a quarter of the 21-band field.
Fort Mill, holder of a state record 24 titles, will square off again with defending 5A champion and 10-time winner Nation Ford. Last year, Fort Mill topped cross-town rival Nation Ford in the preliminary round to claim an upper state title. Nation Ford then flipped the order, winning in the finals for a state title.
Since 1976, Fort Mill schools have won a combined 37 state titles.
The 5A event isn’t just about Fort Mill schools, though. Indian Land is an eight-time state champion. That’s tied for No. 10 all-time in South Carolina. Northwestern won a title in 2008.
Northwestern (9:45 a.m.) and Rock Hill (10:15 a.m.) have morning performances at the River Bluff High School event. Fort Mill (2:15 p.m.), Nation Ford (3 p.m.) and Indian Land (3:30 p.m.) are in the final group of bands before the 4:30 p.m. preliminary round awards.
The state 3A competition is the same day, at Belton-Honea Path High School. The only local school marching in that 22-band event is South Pointe, with a 10 a.m. performance.
Biggest, smallest SC schools wrap up band championships
The final weekend of state title shows offers two competitions on Nov. 1. Both the largest and smallest classifications will compete.
Clover will march in the 6A event at Spartanburg High School. That showdown will have the 18 largest bands competing this fall, by overall school enrollment.
Clover is a two-time state champion, with the school’s last win coming in 2007. Clover will march at 2:30 p.m. for its preliminary show.
Four area bands will march in the 1A event at North Central High School. Lewisville has seven state titles, tied for No. 13 all-time in South Carolina. The last title came in 1987. Andrew Jackson, Buford and York Preparatory Academy are all looking for their first state titles.
Though it’s the smallest classification, the 1A event has the longest preliminary lineup with 24 bands. York Prep marches at 9:15 a.m. followed by Andrew Jackson at 11:45 a.m., Lewisville at 1:45 p.m. and Buford at 2:15 p.m.
