A 63-year old Indian Land woman was killed Wednesday evening after she was run over while her car was accidentally in reverse, the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office said.

Margaret McWeeney got out of her vehicle at Madison Ridge, an apartment complex off Highway 160 about two miles from the North Carolina state line, and didn’t realize her car was still in reverse, according to the coroner’s office.

She attempted to regain control of the vehicle by getting back in, but she accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake, according to the coroner. The car then accelerated, pinning McWeeney and colliding with four parked vehicles before coming to a stop, according to the coroner and South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The coroner pronounced McWeeney dead at the scene. The office is investigating the crash with the Highway Patrol.
