York County communities prepare to celebrate Juneteenth with culture, reflection and unity

As communities across the Carolinas prepare to commemorate Juneteenth, residents in Rock Hill and York, South Carolina, will have several opportunities to honor the historic holiday through music, cultural events, education and community fellowship.

In Rock Hill, a weekend-long celebration will bring residents together to reflect on the significance of Juneteenth while celebrating Black history and culture. The festivities begin Friday, June 19 at Fountain Park, with a Juneteenth Kick-Off event featuring a community gathering, cultural activities and live entertainment. The event is designed to create a space for learning, reflection and celebration while honoring the contributions of African Americans throughout history.

The celebration continues Saturday, June 20, with Freedom Fest, the location of this event has not yet been announced. The family-friendly festival will feature food trucks, local vendors, live music and activities for children. Community members will have the opportunity to support local businesses, enjoy cultural performances and connect with neighbors during a day dedicated to unity and heritage.

The weekend concludes Sunday, June 21, with a Closing Sunday Service at Mount Prospect Baptist Church. The event serves as a reminder of the continued importance of community engagement, equality and collective progress while honoring the legacy of those who fought for freedom and civil rights.

York’s Juneteenth Celebration

Just a short distance away, the City of York will host its annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 20, from noon to 6 p.m. in downtown York. Residents and visitors are encouraged to come out and spend the afternoon enjoying live music, cultural performances, food vendors and educational exhibits highlighting African American history and achievements.

The celebration is intended to both honor the past and inspire future generations by sharing stories of perseverance, achievement and community strength. Through entertainment, education and fellowship, the event aims to foster understanding while recognizing the ongoing impact of African American culture and contributions.
