Coroner: Body in York County pond near Rock Hill was man reported missing by family

A body was recovered Wednesday morning from a York County pond near the city of Rock Hill, sheriff deputies said.

The man was identified as Reginald Witherspoon, 47, of Rock Hill, said Sabrina Gast, York County Coroner.

Wintherpoon’s family had reported him missing to police on June 13, Gast said.

Foul play is not suspected, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The body was recovered before 10 a.m. from a pond in a wooded area off Mount Gallant Road, between U.S. 21 and Dave Lyle Boulevard, Faris said.

The area is just outside the Rock Hill city limits.

The dive team from the sheriff’s office found the body, Faris said.

Sheriff’s office detectives are conducting a death investigation, Faris said.

Fire and rescue officials, EMS and other emergency first responders were on scene.

The incident is the second recovery of a person in the water this week in York County. A kayaker drowned Sunday in the Catawba River in Tega Cay, officials said.
