Man found dead in York County pond after boat capsizes, officials say

A man was found dead in a York County pond Friday afternoon after the man had been fishing, according to South Carolina wildlife and sheriff officials.

The man had been fishing from a motor boat in a western York County pond near Sharon, with permission from a landowner, said Officer Jeff Vissage of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. A 911 call to emergency officials around 11:30 a.m. reported the boat had capsized, Vissage said.

The 911 caller said the man couldn’t be found, Vissage said.

South Carolina wildlife officers, York County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other emergency responders went to the scene, Vissage said.

A sheriff’s office dive team found the man’s body in the water around 4 p.m., according to Vissage and Trent Faris, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

The death remains under investigation by DNR and the York County Coroner’s Office.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast has not yet identified the man who died.
