Sheriff: SLED helicopter finds man’s body near Catawba River in York County

The body of a man who had been reported acting erratically Monday has been found in York County near the Catawba River, officials said.

Deputies had received a report earlier Monday about the man acting in a strange manner then fleeing into a marshy area near the New-Indy Containerboard plant along the river in the 5300 block of Cureton Ferry Road, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office. The plant was formerly the Bowater industrial site and sits across the river from Lancaster County.

“We are unsure at this time why the subject was acting in an erratic manner,” Faris said.

The man’s body was found late Monday by a State Law Enforcement Division helicopter after deputies asked SLED to assist, Faris said. The body was found in a thickly wooded area of the marsh along the river, Faris said.

Foul play is not suspected but a death investigation remains ongoing by the sheriff’s office and SLED, Faris said.

The man was not a resident of the area where he was found, but was working in some capacity nearby, Faris said.

The sheriff’s office flew a drone over the site Monday afternoon and had K-9 and other patrol officers search the area after the man went missing, Faris said.

The man’s name has not been released by the York County Coroner’s Office.
