NC worker dead in York County, SC, after Tega Cay construction incident, officials say

A North Carolina construction worker died Wednesday afternoon in Tega Cay after an incident while operating heavy machinery, officials said.

Juventino Santiago, 38, of Kannapolis, N.C., died at the scene on Holly Cover Road, said Sabrina Gast, York County Coroner.

Santiago was operating equipment when he died, Gast said.

Tega Cay Police Department and Tega Cay Fire Department responded to the scene, Police Chief Steve Parker said.

Joseph Shook, communications manager for Tega Cay, referred questions about the case to the coroner’s office.

No other details have been released.

Under South Carolina law, all workplace fatalities must be reported to the state office off Occupational Safety and Health Administration, according to the OSHA Web site.

OSHA has started an investigation into the death, said Holly Beeson, spokesperson for the agency.
