More than a dozen York, Lancaster and Chester county bridges are up next for repairs.

On Monday the South Carolina Department of Transportation announced its 2021-22 list of closed and load-restricted bridges up for fixes or replacement. A public comment period runs through Jan. 3, 2022. Barring what a department release calls substantive comments, the bridges will make the cut for new work.

The plan covers more than 150 bridges in 39 counties. There are 12 included primary route bridges in York, Lancaster or Chester counties. There are another seven secondary route bridges.

Work is similar to SCDOT projects brought on by a 2017 increase in the state gas tax, which started or completed several area projects like the Old Nation Road over Steele Creek bridge replacement in Fort Mill.

York, Lancaster, Chester bridges

Two York County bridges are just a few miles from one another on Charlotte Highway. One travels over Allison Creek in Lake Wylie, the other over Fishing Creek near downtown York. The other primary York County bridge is on Irene Bridge Highway, where York and Cherokee counties meet.

Bridges on secondary roads in York County include Mt. Gallant Road over Big Dutchman Creek and Robertson Road over Wildcat Creek in Rock Hill, and Barrett Road over Beaverdam Creek north of Clover. Two more bridges sit just across the Cherokee line, including one at Kings Mountain National Military Park shared by the two counties.

Lancaster County has five listed primary road bridges. Two are on Kershaw Camden Highway, over Bear (Lancaster) and Hanging Rock (Kershaw) creeks. Two more are on West Meeting Street in Lancaster, over Bear and Cane creeks. The other is at Gold Mine Highway north of Kershaw, over Lynches Creek. Two more bridges sit on the Lancaster County borders with Kershaw and Chesterfield counties.

Three secondary road bridges in Lancaster County are on Old Landsford Road over Bear Creek and Springdale Road over a railroad line in Lancaster, and Hanging Rock Church Road over Hanging Rock Creek south of Kershaw.

Chester County has four primary and one secondary route bridges listed. Three are on Center Road, over Turkey and Susybole creeks near the York County line and Sandy River near downtown Chester. The Fairfield Road bridge over Sandy River is in western Chester County. The Ross Dye Road bridge over Little Rocky Creek is between I-77 and Great Falls.
