Man killed in crash with tractor-trailer on I-77 in Chester County, police say

A South Carolina man was killed Monday in a crash with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 77 in Chester County, officials said.

Ray Jackson Carter III, 31, of Great Falls, was killed in the collision, said Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker.

The wreck happened around 7 a.m. Monday near mile marker 60 of northbound I-77, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Carter was driving a 2021 Dodge that struck a tractor-trailer in the rear, Miller said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt, Miller said.

Richburg Fire-Rescue responded to the scene along with other emergency officials.

The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Department of Public Safety and the coroner’s office.

The crash was the second fatal collision on I-77 in Chester County in less than 12 hours. A man was killed Sunday night in a collision on northbound I-77 near mile marker 66, officials said.
