1 dead, 6 taken to hospital after Chester County fatal crash on I-77, troopers say
One person was killed and six others were taken to a hospital after a crash on Interstate 77 in Chester County, officials said.
The collision happened around 9:15 p.m. Sunday near mile marker 66 on I-77 north near a highway rest area, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The driver of a 2014 Toyota Camry was killed when that vehicle, which had left the rest area, struck a northbound 2006 Kia SUV with six people in it, Miller said.
There were no passengers in the Toyota, Miller said. The identity and residence of the Toyota driver who was killed have not been released by the Chester County Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the Kia SUV was from Charlotte, Miller said. The Kia driver and five passengers in the SUV were taken to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill for precautionary reasons after the wreck, Miller said. Their conditions were not available Monday.
The northbound lanes of I-77 were blocked as police and emergency crews worked the crash, but the highway reopened late Sunday night.
The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Department of Public Safety and the coroner.
