1 dead, 1 hurt in fatal Lancaster SC crash when van hits tree, trooper says
A van passenger was killed and the driver hurt Tuesday in a crash in Lancaster County, officials said.
The wreck happened around 6:15 a.m. on S.C. 200 near Bethel Road south of Lancaster, said Master Trooper Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
A van driven by a 36-year-old Lancaster man went off the road, down an embankment, and hit a tree, Miller said.
The driver was airlifted by helicopter to a Columbia hospital, officials said. The condition of the driver was unavailable Tuesday afternoon.
The passenger died in the crash, Miller said.
The name of the person who was killed has not yet been released by the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office.
The collision remains under investigation by the coroner and the S.C. Department of Public Safety Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT.)
The highway fatality is the sixth in Lancaster County in 2022, public safety statistics show.
