A passenger died and a driver was hurt in a single vehicle crash in Lancaster County, police and coroner officials in South Carolina said.

The wreck happened Thursday afternoon on U.S. 521 near the intersection of Dobys Bridge Road in the Indian Land are, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The area is south of the North Carolina state line near the site where Indian Land schools are located.

A 2011 Honda went off the road and hit a ditch and embankment, Ridgeway said.

The 87-year-old male passenger died at a North Carolina hospital in Pineville after being transported by EMS, said Ridgeway and Karla Knight-Deese, Lancaster County Coroner.

The name of the man who died has not been released.

The driver, an 80-year-old woman, was hurt in the wreck and was transported to the hospital in North Carolina. Her condition has not been released.

The fatal collision remains under investigation by the highway patrol and the coroner’s office.

The fatal collision is the seventh in Lancaster County in 2022, and the second in the county this week, according to S.C. Department of Public Safety statistics.
