A bridge in western Rock Hill will be replaced, and road planners are ready to take questions.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation set a public information meeting for 5-7 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Emmett Scott Recreation Center. That meeting will address the bridge on Oak Park Road over Tools Fork Creek.

The drop-in event at 801 Crawford Road will have project displays, comment forms and other information. SCDOT representatives will be available to answer questions. More information on the project is available online at scdotgis.online/oakparkroad.

The bridge is on a stretch of Oak Park Road between McConnells Highway and Falls Road. It’s not far west of Heckle Boulevard.

The bridge now is two lanes. The new bridge also will be, but will be smaller. A temporary detour in the area will run 18-24 months. Falls Road and McConnells Highway will be used. The detour will be almost three miles.

Comments on the project will be taken through Sept. 14. They can be submitted at the upcoming meeting or via the project website. Comments also can be emailed to EdwardsTC@scdot.org or mailed to Mr. Tony Edwards PE, SCDOT Project Manager, SCDOT, Post Office Box 191, Columbia, SC 29202-0191.

A 2017 state gas tax increase set off a 10-year plan for SCDOT that includes the replacement of 465 bridges statewide. That number represents more than half of the 750 structurally deficient bridges identified by the state at that time.

Completed, ongoing or planned work from that plan includes 23 bridges in York County, 21 bridges in Lancaster County and seven Chester County bridges. Plus several others in neighboring counties that come up to the county lines of York, Lancaster or Chester.
