SC driver killed Monday in I-77 wreck in Chester County, highway patrol says

A person was killed Monday afternoon in a crash off Interstate 77 in Chester County, officials said.

A car went off southbound I-77 and overturned after hitting an embankment, said Lance Cpl. Nick Pye of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

On Tuesday, the person who died was identified as Amy Hatch, 30, of Columbia, according to the Chester County Coroner’s Office.

The highway near the York County line had one of two southbound lanes closed for around two hours, causing delays during the afternoon commute, officials said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Chester County Coroner and the S.C. Department of Public Safety.

Commute time crashes

Officials estimate the area of the interstate sees thousands of vehicles per day during the daily commute.

A quarter of all fatal crashes in Chester County in 2022 -- five fatal crashes -- were on I-77, according to statistics from the public safety department studied by The Herald for its series on commuting between Upstate South Carolina and Charlotte.
