Man charged with DUI after 3-year-old child dies in Fort Mill car crash, police say

A man is charged with driving under the influence in connection with a car crash late Friday in Fort Mill, S.C., where a child died, according to police, and arrest warrants.

The 3-year-old child was a passenger in the car and died later at Piedmont Medical Center-Fort Mill after the single-vehicle wreck, according to the documents and a written statement from the Fort Mill Police Department. There was another adult passenger in the car, the documents stated.

Tyrique Dequan Boyce, 26, of Fort Mill, was the driver, according to arrest warrants and a collision report obtained by The Herald. Boyce was charged Friday with DUI resulting in death in regard to the child, and DUI resulting in great bodily injury in connection with the other passenger, according to the arrest warrants.

Boyce was in custody at the York County jail, according to Fort Mill police Capt. Steven Bivins and the York County Sheriff’s Office jail Web site.

The identity and gender of the child has not been released by the York County Coroner’s Office.

Fort Mill police responded around midnight to Munn Road near Fort Mill High School, according to the police collision report and the statement from Fort Mill police. Boyce and the adult passenger in the vehicle were transported to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said.

Munn Road is in northern York County, and runs parallel to Interstate 77 and U.S. 21 south of S.C. 160.

The car, a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro, went off the road an overturned, according to the police department collision report.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.

The road fatality is the sixth in York County in 2023, according to online statistics from the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
