Convicted felon Jamil Omire Ali found out Friday that he could run after a York County deputy was injured in a chase, but that he could not hide forever.

Ali was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday, 10 months after he was found guilty in a trial that featured prosecutors, police and lawyers, but not Ali. Ali did not show up for the trial.

He ran from police after the crash, then fled from the court system while out on bond, authorities said.

The running stopped Friday.

Ali’s sentence for failure to stop for blue lights resulting in great bodily injury was unsealed Friday.

It was unsealed after Ali, 24, of Charlotte, finished a North Carolina prison term, said Aaron Hayes, a 16th Circuit assistant solicitor who won a conviction against Ali in the trial where he failed to appear.

On April 5, 2016, Ali was stopped by York County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Marina Arbelo on Carowinds Boulevard. Ali fled; Arbelo broke her collarbone and had other injuries in a crash during the chase, said Hayes.

Ali was caught three weeks later in North Carolina, and was released on bond, but did not show up for court. Hayes tried Ali in his absence; he was convicted in November 2016.

Ali was convicted again in December 2016 in a lower magistrate court, also in his absence, of drug possession and driving without a license, court records show.

In February, North Carolina police caught Ali, Hayes said.

Ali had to first finish a North Carolina prison sentence. He was brought back to York County this week to face sentencing for the crash involving the deputy, said Hayes.
