He was walking through York County traffic. Was he ‘trying to get hit by a car’?
York County officers asked a West Virginia man if he was walking in the highway because he was trying to get hit by a car. He told them he was just trying to get away from his wife.
Timothy Edward Bennett, 60, of Charleston, W.Va., was arrested on disorderly conduct charges Aug. 5, after telling deputies he wanted to get away from his spouse.
Deputies reported Bennett was drinking a beer behind a dumpster at the time, when they responded to calls about a man walking in Old York Road in the Rock Hill area, “trying to get hit by a car.”
According to the York County Sheriff’s Office report, the incident happened a little before 9 p.m. Sunday.
Officers were told a man was intentionally walking through traffic to get a car to hit him.
Bennett’s wife, a York resident, told authorities he was suicidal.
Bennett told deputies that he wasn’t trying to get a car to hit him and that he had no intention of hurting himself, but he “just wanted his wife to leave him alone.”
Officers found Bennett to be grossly intoxicated, according to the report, slurring his speech and having difficulty maintaining balance. He was arrested and charged with public disorderly conduct.
