Man shot in Chester when bullet from outside goes through house wall, police say

A Chester man was wounded Tuesday night when a gunman fired shots into a house, police said.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. at a home on Jewell Street, said Eric Williams, Chester Police Department chief.

“We do not have evidence at this point that this was a drive-by shooting, but we are certain that shots were fired into the dwelling from outside and the victim was hit,” Williams said.

The injured man was first taken to Medical University of South Carolina in Chester County, then transferred to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, Williams said.

The extent of the victim’s injuries were unknown, Williams said. The victim has not been identified, but Williams said he is 21 years old.

No arrests have been made. Chester officers have interviewed witnesses and also are asking for the public’s help.

“We are asking neighbors or anyone else who knows anything to let us know so that we can continue to investigate this case and determine what happened and who is responsible,” Williams said.

Earlier this year, Williams and Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey said that a rash of recent shootings led to an increased police presence, including the State Law Enforcement Division, in problem areas.

Chester police, county deputies and SLED have investigated at least 16 shootings in Chester in 2019, according to police reports.

Four people in Chester County have been killed since October in fatal shootings, according to police.
