Rock Hill man charged in fatal shooting. What happened at bond hearing?

A Rock Hill man has been charged with murder after another man was fatally shot two days after Christmas, police said.

Montrece Shajuan Kennedy, 26, turned himself in to police Friday morning around 10 a.m. at the Rock Hill Law Center.

Kennedy is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, police and court records show.

Kennedy was wanted on the charges after Robert Lee Dockery Jr., 39, was found dead on Calhoun Street around 9 p.m. on Dec. 27, said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department.

Kennedy appeared in court Friday afternoon, but did not say anything about the shooting. He told Rock Hill Municipal Judge Tony Triano that he understood the charges against him.

Triano denied bond to Kennedy.

“You are charged with killing Robert Lee Dockery Jr with malice aforethought,” Triano said in court. “These are very serious charges...They carry the potential of life in prison.”

Murder carries a potential sentence of 30 years to life in prison under South Carolina law.

Judge Triano also ordered that Kennedy have no contact with Dockery’s family, after Rock Hill victim advocate officials read a statement from the victim’s family in court about safety concerns.

Rock Hill police were present in court but did not release additional information about what led up to the fatal shooting. Dockery was shot in the Boyd Hill neighborhood near the intersection of Cherry Road and Main Street west of downtown Rock Hill.

Kennedy’s lawyer, Geoff Dunn, did not address the charges in court, and declined comment after the hearing.

Kennedy was later transferred to the York County jail, police said.
