Rock Hill felon caught, jailed weeks after Christmas Eve shooting, police say

Police have charged a convicted felon after a man was wounded on Christmas Eve in a shooting outside a Rock Hill home, police said.

Jaquavius Daquan Belton, 25, of Rock Hill, was arrested late Wednesday on charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department.

The victim, 22, was shot in the abdomen in the 300 block of Maple Street around 3 p.m. Dec. 24, according to police incident reports.

Officers recovered shell casings and other evidence, Chavis said.

The victim was hospitalized but survived, Chavis said. Police have not released other details about the shooting.

Late Wednesday, officers with the Rock Hill police street crimes unit and deputies from the York County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Group located Belton and took him into custody, according to police reports.

Belton has previous felony convictions for drugs and weapons, York County court records show.

He was sentenced to five years in a South Carolina prison in 2013 after he was convicted of two felony drug charges and three weapons charges, according to York County court records.

Under South Carolina and federal law, Belton is barred from possessing a gun or ammunition because of his past felony convictions, court records show.

Attempted murder carries up to 30 years in prison for a conviction under South Carolina law. The charge of possession of a gun during a violent crime carries up to five years in prison, S.C. law shows.

Belton was denied bail in a court hearing Thursday morning at the Rock Hill Municipal Court and will be transferred to the York County jail pending trial, according to police and court records.
