York County man was tied up, attacked with machete during home invasion; 2 men charged
A pair of Rock Hill men face attempted murder and kidnapping charges after a victim was attacked with a machete and bound with duct tape during a home invasion, deputies said.
Joseph William Collins, 33, and Derrick McKnight Cook, 46, face charges of armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. They were arrested following the incident Tuesday on Vintage Lane south of Rock Hill, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office.
Collins was caught after a foot chase by deputies that involved a K-9 unit and patrol officers, Faris said.
Officers were called after the victim escaped and called 911 from a neighbor’s home, according to a sheriff’s office incident report. The victim, a 59-year-old man, told police he was beaten, punched, and cut with the knife as two suspects in ski masks demanded money and guns, according to the report.
“Two males entered the residence and began punching and beating him up,” deputies wrote in the report. “The suspects then escalated their violence and tied him up with duct tape and began cutting him with a machete.”
The victim was injured but further information on his condition was unavailable.
Both men face as much as 85 years in prison if convicted of all the from the home invasion charges under South Carolina law.
Cook had pleaded guilty in February in York County court to felony possession of a stolen vehicle and was sentenced to 45 days in jail to be served on weekends, according to South Carolina court records.
Cook had 11 pending warrants from other incidents that were served on him when he was arrested for his role in the armed home invasion, Faris said. From those previous incidents, Cook is charged with drug trafficking of heroin and crack, burglary, grand larceny, and damage to property to obtain precious metals, Faris said.
Cook and Collins are being held without bail at the York County jail.
