Suspect arrested in Florida, now must return to York County to face murder charges
A man wanted on murder charges in a York County shooting death has been arrested in Florida, officials said.
Corey Jermaine Troupe, 49, was taken into custody Thursday morning by police in Dade County, Fla., said York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson.
“This was a great effort by our agency to locate the suspect and see to his apprehension,” Tolson said.
Troupe is originally from the Miami area, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies have a warrant charging Troupe with murder in Monday’s fatal shooting of a Charlotte man. The incident took place in a rural area of York County outside Rock Hill, sheriff’s deputies said. Tony J. Stephens, 34, was found dead near the intersection of Hall Spencer Road and Quaint Lane, coroner and sheriff officials said.
Details about the relationship between Troupe and Stephens or a motive for the shooting have not been released.
Troupe cannot be served the murder arrest warrant until he is back in South Carolina after extradition, Faris said. But he can be held in jail in Florida through the extradition process, Faris said.
Prosecutors will work to bring Troupe back to South Carolina, said Willy Thompson, 16th Circuit Deputy Solicitor.
A conviction for murder in South Carolina carries a sentence of 30 years to life in prison.
It remains unclear if Troupe will waive extradition.
