Police: Man, 42, killed in Chester shooting; city of 5,500 had two shootings Friday
A man was shot and killed in Chester on Friday night, police said.
The victim was identified by the Chester Police Department and Chester County Coroner’s office as Christopher Mayfield, 42.
The shooting happened in the 200 block of York Street, said Eric Williams, Chester police chief. The area is near the Chester Homes apartments.
Officers were called to a shots fired call and found Mayfield with a gunshot wound, Williams said.
No arrests have been made in Mayfield’s death, Williams said.
The shooting death was Chester’s second shooting in hours on Friday, police said.
Chester is a city of about 5,500 people, located between Rock Hill and Columbia in South Carolina. It is the county seat of Chester County.
Earlier on Friday, before 5 p.m., Chester police and Chester County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a woman who was shot at the Chester Heights II apartments on Dawson Drive, said Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey and Randall Marsh of the police department. That woman was wounded, Marsh said.
That first shooting happened near the sheriff’s office.
Her name and condition have not been released.
Police have not said the two shooting incidents are related.
