Infant’s death in Chester County under investigation, officials say

Police are investigating a baby’s death in Chester County, officials said Wednesday, a requirement under state law for all unexpected child fatalities.

Police and coroner officials responded to a home on 2nd Street in Chester where the baby was found dead, according to a statement from the Chester County Sheriff’s Office.

A child fatality team from the State Law Enforcement Division also responded, sheriff’s deputies said. SLED responds to all deaths of persons under age 17 in South Carolina, said Terry Tinker, Chester County Coroner.

SLED spokesman Tommy Crosby said the state law requires the investigation.

An autopsy will be done on Friday, Tinker said.

Chester deputies released a statement on Facebook and Twitter that a death investigation is ongoing, but no other information has been released.
