Chester County deputies, SC bomb squad, respond to threat at industrial plant

County and state police from SLED have been called to a bomb threat at an industrial plant in Chester, officials said.

The incident was ongoing Friday morning around 10:45 a.m. at Carolina Poly located between Chester and Richburg on S.C. 9, according to the Chester County Sheriff’s Office.

The plant has been evacuated, said Ed Darby, deputy director of Chester County Emergency Management.

The plant’s management evacuated employees as law enforcement and emergency officials investigate, said Max Dorsey, Chester County Sheriff.

Chester County deputies are on scene and the State Law Enforcement Division bomb squad is responding to the plant located on Lancaster Highway west of Interstate 77, Dorsey said.

There have been no reports of injuries, Dorsey said.

Other Chester County emergency officials are also on scene.

The area is outside the city of Chester but located within the five mile-radius of the Chester Fire Department’s district.

Carolina Poly Inc. produces trash bags, plastic sheeting, shrink films and other products. Part of Poly-America, one of the largest polyethylene film manufacturers in the U.S., Carolina Poly announced in 2015 a $100 million investment in Chester County. The 500-square-foot facility at 1580 Lancaster Highway began production in 2017.
