Suspect in I-77 shootout arrested, charged with attempted murder

A man is in police custoday and charged with attempted murder following what law enforcement officials describe as a shootout on Interstate 77.

The man is identified by the York County Sheriff’s Department as 22-year-old Aaron Malik Pinckney, from Ridgeland, S.C.

Pinckney, was arrested at about 5:30 p.m. Friday. The arrest took place at his apartment on Paces Landing Road in Rock Hill, S.C., York County Public Information Officer Trent Faris told the Herald.

The shootout took place Friday morning, resulting in one injury. Two vehicles were traveling on I-77 when shots were fired, Faris said.

Police pursued Pinckney and asked the public for help after discovering the injured victim.

The person who was wounded was found in a vehicle at a convenience store at the intersection of Mount Gallant Road and Celanese Road, just outside the Rock Hill city limits, officials said. The person’s injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

It is believed that the two persons involved knew each other, Faris said. No other highway drivers were hurt in the gunfire.
