After Chester, SC man shot to death, second man charged with murder, police say

A Chester man is charged with murder after another man was fatally shot, according to officials and court documents.

Wayne Alexander Caldwell, 42, of Chester, died after he was shot Saturday night, said Terry Tinker, Chester County Coroner.

Caldwell’s death was a homicide, Tinker said.

Sundrez Dashaune Gregory, 25, of Chester, is in the Chester County jail charged with murder in connection to the shooting, according to jail records and an arrest warrant obtained by The Herald.

The Chester Police Department charged Gregory with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to interim Police Chief Milton Sims and the arrest warrant. Sims said the investigation remains ongoing.

The arrest warrant alleges Gregory shot Caldwell in the head and body. The incident happened in the Brooklyn neighborhood, on Starnes Street near Ashford Street, south of downtown Chester, according to officials with the police department and coroner’s office.

Gregory was denied bond after an initial appearance in Chester County court, Chester County jail records show.

Sixth Circuit Public Defender William Frick, Gregory’s lawyer, said his office will conduct its own investigation into the allegations but declined further comment.

A conviction for murder in South Carolina carries a mandatory sentence of 30 years to life in a S.C. Department of Corrections prison.
