Security shot a man who stabbed someone at a Rock Hill Islamic center, police say
One man stabbed another at a Rock Hill Islamic center before security shot and injured the assailant on Friday afternoon, according to city police.
Police don’t suspect the incident was “based on religious practices” but said in a news release the men who were stabbed and shot were acquaintances.
The incident happened a little after 2 p.m. at the Masjid Al Salaam at 222 West Main St.
Travaughn West, 27, of Rock Hill, approached a 44-year-old man after a service and stabbed him in the abdomen, according to the report. An on-site security guard confronted West and shot him after West continued to act “in a violent manner,” police say.
West fled, and officers found him in the Laurel Street area. Police described the gunshot wounds as minor. Officers also found the stabbing victim at the mosque and transported him to Piedmont Medical Center.
Both men are expected to recover, according to police.
After West is released from the hospital, he will face charges of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a knife during a violent crime.
The investigation is ongoing.
