A man died and a woman is hospitalized after both were shot Wednesday afternoon near an elementary school in Rock Hill, police said.

No arrests have been made in the shooting on Amelia Drive in a residential neighborhood west of Cherry Road.

The shooting happened around 12:45 p.m. near Richmond Drive Elementary School but there was no connection with the school, Rock Hill Police Department Lt. Michael Chavis said Wednesday afternoon.

The school was put on a “secure” status where exterior doors were locked, said Lindsay Machak, spokesperson for the Rock Hill school district. The secure status with extra security on campus remained until after dismissal, she said.

The man died at the scene of the shooting after officers found him in a vehicle, the police department said in a statement. The man had been shot several times.

Officers found the woman who had been shot in the head and hand in a driveway, police said. She was taken to a hospital but her condition is unknown.

Both victims are adults, Chavis said. The ages and identities of the two people shot have not been released.

No other details have been released as the investigation continues.
